Spring Forward to Better Health!
Spring is on its way, and with the time change taking place this weekend, it’s a good reminder to make sure your sleep is not compromised with that 1 hour lost.
This is one time we make sure we take Melatonin at bedtime. It helps us to naturally fall asleep and stay asleep for at least 5 to 6 hours. Melatonin has significantly improved our total sleep time.
Melatonin has received substantial publicity for its ability to promote natural sleep patterns, stimulate the immune system, decrease jet lag and its role as a powerful antioxidant.
So, what is Melatonin, you ask?
Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland located in the center of the brain. Its secretion is inhibited by light and stimulated by darkness. Therefore, melatonin production peaks at night. Research shows that the body's natural production of melatonin decreases with age.
The optimal dose time to take melatonin is between 2 and 4 mg, with the optimal dose timing to be about 30 minutes before bedtime. A study also found that the longer we supplement with melatonin, the more increased total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and the largest improvements in promoting sleep.
